Mr. Nghệ is the descendant of Nguyen Lord, his full name is Tôn Thất Nghệ. In Hue, when you heard the surname Tôn Thất for men and Tôn Nữ for women, that means they are from the royal family. Mr Nghệ is the first host of our cycling tour in Hue service team. He has kept the family’s tradition very well and developed it for the grandchildren. His ancient house is approximately 200 years old. It has the Chinese word Chấn Gia Phong upon which literally means Protect and Develop Family Tradition. In fact, his family is absolutely perfect. There are three generations living in an ancient house with five children and eleven grandchildren. He builds another modern house next to for the growth of family members. All of them live around the village and always help their parents when our tourists come. They all are very happy and kind to tourists and tour guides. Mrs. Sam (his wife) happily shows us off the pictures that their children and grandchildren hold a surprisingly 50th wedding Anniversary for the old couple.
The modest but wonderful way to welcome tourists
As you have known, tourism has changed people’s characters. It makes people more confident and even so cunning. However, Mr. Nghệ seems to remain a truly Hue character. He is nice, careful, modest, and generous to everyone. All of our guides were impressed by this simple but special man. When we start the cycling tour in Hue at his house, he was not confident because this is a local house and he cannot speak a foreign language. He was very worried about the preparations for the guests. He woke up very early to set-up the table, chair, picked-up the most beautiful flowers in the garden to decorate the table, clean up the house. Everything needs to be well and match with our training. Now, he is quite confident but as always, he is still very shy and few words, just say “hello” with a timid smile. In that situation, from the kitchen, his wife Mrs. Sâm comes and friendly greets tourists by some sentences to save for his embarrassment. It is so funny. However, we love his honest, kind character, his perfect services, and of course, Mrs. Sâm’s home meal.
