After half an hour of warming up cycling to exit Hue city centre (3km, moderate traffic), you follow the countryside road along the canal, rice field toward Thanh Toan village. Established around 16th century, the village expanded over an immense farming territory and served as a rice basket for Hue ancient capital. Its fame also relates to the ancient Thanh Toan tile roofed bridge.
Your first stop is the communal temple, a national relic constructed with Feng Shui principles and a beautiful decorative mosaic. Your guide shares the roles of this rural institution and many stories about rice culture.
Gradually, you are no longer a by-passer but become a real farmer working by the side of the local villagers. Feel welcome to a local farm. Depending on the season, you learn the basics of planting, harvesting, rice processing or feeding pigs, chicken, fish, etc. Refresh and relax in the heart of his “heaven” and exchange some convivial moments over a tea break. Green tea and farming produce are healthy and tasty.
Continue to visit Thanh Toan tile roofed bridge, one of the three surviving of its kinds in Vietnam. Learn the inspiring story of Mrs.Tran Thi Dao, a virtuous Lady who donated her fortune to build this bridge in 1775. A friendly fisherman said “Welcome you on board” to his sampan, moved by pushing a bamboo pole and paddle. Come have fun catching some fishes, tendering duck flock or eventually trying a boat race with fellow travelers.
Spend some interactive moments with friendly villagers. Wandering the rural market, or photographing rustic life scenes before we head back to the city along the green paths.
