This tour takes you to the riverside craft villages that once thrived around the Bao Vinh Old Quarter in the 17th century. You’ll retrace the charm of Minh Huong Chinese merchant houses, explore a lively market, and visit unique workshops scattered across the surviving craft villages. Engage in hands-on activities like Sinh woodblock printing and crafting Thanh Tien’s colorful paper flowers. Follow the artisans as they share age-old techniques, offering you a deeper appreciation for the native spiritual expressions embodied in these crafts.
Resembling the fate of the Bao Vinh trading port, the craft villages near Huế flourished during the 17th century but now struggle to survive. This tour invites you to explore the lesser-known old quarter downstream of the Perfume River while lending a helping hand to revive Huế’s distinctive arts and crafts.
Unlike the atmospheric and well-promoted town of Hội An, Bao Vinh receives less attention. Nevertheless, its charm and daily activities are equally fascinating to explore. You can choose to start the tour from the city center by bike or opt for a direct transfer to Bao Vinh, shortening the cycling distance by 3-5 km. After a lively stroll through the area, you’ll cross the river on a local ferry and cycle 5 km to visit various craft villages. Alternatively, traveling by motorbike is also a good option.
In folk culture and belief, these crafts are traditionally made for burning and worshipping. Today, they are also used as decorative items. While these activities peak about a month before Tết holidays, we’ve made the experience available year-round as part of our effort to support dedicated artisans. By participating, you are directly contributing to the preservation of their craftsmanship.
This immersive experience offers a variety of rural activities, so timing will remain flexible to ensure your utmost enjoyment. The tour order and cycling routes are subject to adjustment based on departure time, seasons, and guest preferences.
Child rates are applied for children 6 to 11 years old. Children below 6 years are free, please make a note in the booking. For families with many children, we recommend using the Enquiry Form to request the most favorable Family Offer.

8:00-12:00 or 13:00-17:00
Start your journey with a bike or drive to Bao Vinh Old Quarter, located 5 km northeast of Huế. After a brief introduction to the history of this merchant town and nearby craft villages, stroll through its quaint alleys lined with ancient wooden houses and heritage temples. Bao Vinh offers the charm of Hội An without the tourist crowds. Visit workshops like blacksmithing and mother-of-pearl inlay, then enjoy local snacks and products at the central market.
Before Tết, nearby Dia Linh Village becomes active with the production of earthenware kitchen god amulets—an intriguing tradition to explore. Continue along riverside villages such as Trieu Son Nam and Thanh Phuoc for authentic glimpses of local life before taking a short ferry ride to the craft villages of Sinh, Thanh Tien, and Tien Non.
Nestled among rice fields and flower farms, these three villages are renowned for traditional woodblock printing, five-color paper flowers, and lacquered wood carving. Beyond a rural livelihood, these crafts once paid tribute to emperors, reflected Confucian values like filial piety and ritual, and served as expressions of worship for family wellbeing.
With guidance from artisans, discover the natural origins of vibrant colors used in Sinh woodblock paintings, which depict daily life, folk culture, and beliefs. In Thanh Tien, try your hand at crafting delicate paper flowers or a lotus branch. Let your storytelling guide and the artisans inspire you with local legends brought to life through these intricate arts.
End your creative journey with a visit to an ancient village pagoda, where you can admire masterful lacquered wood carvings. A dragon boat will take you back to the city, gliding peacefully for about 30 minutes past Con Hen Island and the historic Vi Da Old Town.
