13:00 Meet at Slow Travel Hue (office). After a tour briefing and bike check, follow your dedicated guide towards Bao Vinh Ancient Town, approximately 5 km.
This first section is a bit thrilling as we cycle past Dong Ba, the century-old central market, through tree-lined streets and shophouses revealing authentic sights of everyday life in Vietnam.
Arrive in Bao Vinh to explore its typical architecture, the role of the communal temple, and how this famous trading port flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries, as well as its enduring presence and hopeful future.
Continue strolling through the heritage merchant houses, market, and hidden alleys, where a few traditional guilds, including bamboo work, blacksmithing, and mother-of-pearl inlay, are still active.
Get on a slow wooden boat, the main way villagers and farmers from Tien Non and Thanh Tien connect, shop, and sell farm produce. Share a conversation or friendly smile. Life is simple and peaceful.
Continue cycling through rice fields, green hedges, and flower farms. The scenery changes with the seasons, with the months around Tet, the Lunar New Year, being particularly colorful as flowers for offerings become the main crop.
Visit an artisan in Thanh Tien Village to discover the purpose of paper flowers, their roots in Confucian virtues, and how their five colors reflect the Oriental universe. Observe, listen, and make your own lotus or creative flower using age-old techniques. The finished flower is a thank-you gift for you.
Not far from Thanh Tien lies Sinh Village, known for its annual spring festival of traditional wrestling. Sinh folk paintings are a manifestation of indigenous spiritual life, a quest for well-being and protection from the spiritual world beyond the human realm. Meet the committed artisan preserving the techniques of woodblock carving and printing, then create your own print on natural Dzo paper.
After some refreshment, cycle slowly back to the city center with fond memories and a deeper understanding of Hue people, their beliefs, and their love of life.
Finish in the city center around 17:30.
