Like Central Vietnam, the desert region of Australia also has a Melaleuca species with the same family as the Melaleuca cajuputi. The natives call this plant Niaouli, and use it for a variety of purposes from healing, tea drinking to rituals. Tràm Năm Gân has been successfully planted in Hue and produced very high quality essential oil, pleasant aroma.
The name Tràm Năm Gân is refered to its five-veined paperbark, and its scentific name is Melaleuca quinquenervia. This variety has the highest concentration and essential oil content among more than 42 species studied. In fresh Melaleuca leaves, the essential oil content can reach 1.3% – 2.4%, the ratio of 1,8- cineole ranges from 0.2% to 65% (Brophy and Doran, 1996), or 5-50% (Brophy et al, 2013). Therefore, Niaouli is also a tree planted near the house to repel mosquitoes.
Niaouli oil can be used as a flavoring agent in foods (confectionery, desserts, non-alcoholic beverages), or used in making ice cream, mouthwash liquid, herbal cosmetics, soap (Khan). et al, 2010), make medicine, cure cough, rheumatism, and massage. In France, Niaouli oil is used as a traditional medicine and is sometimes substituted for cajuput or eucalyptus essential oil for coughs, rheumatism, neuralgia, chronic mucositis, etc.
